Pliopithecus zhanxiangi

Most of the fossils attributed to Pliopithecus zhanxiangi were recovered from middle Miocene deposits in Tongxin, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China, by researchers from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) and the Bureau of Geology, Ningxia (BGN). This mandible, however, was obtained from a nearby farmer who handed it over to the BGN. It's probably impossible to ever know the precise location from where it came, but it's believed to have likely come from a locality in Bianchiangou near Yujianliang Village. Given the age of the Bianchiangou deposits and the close morphological similarities to P. zhanxiangi specimens from Tongxin, the BGN mandible is attributed to P. zhanxiangi.
